The Purpose of Art

The purpose of art is different for every person.  It changes as your imagination changes.  The purpose of art is to express yourself and your creative side through other means than just words.  It's a way of expressing your creativity through a multitude of forms.  Each and every piece created has its own mini purpose that connects to the overall purpose of art.  I believe art is a way to escape.  A way to escape from our problems, from our tasks, from our lives.  It is a way to put your life on hold, for a moment and only worry about making your vision come to life.  Art serves us, we do not serve it.  All in all, the purpose of art is to express who you are and to make your visions come to life.  Whether that means figuratively, imaginatively or realistically.  The purpose of art does not have just one meaning, it has many.  In my opinion, art makes us who we are.

Responsibility of an artist

Every artist's responsibility differs.  Every artist's has multiple responsibilities.  Sending visual and meaningful messages through art, is one important responsibility, for me.  Every piece created has a purpose behind it, whether it is visible or not.  In my opinion, art impacts change or paves the way for change.  Through giving my pieces deep and meaningful messages, I am able to contribute to the path for change.  Applying background knowledge and passions to the paper, is a big part of being an artist.  In order for me to effectively create pieces that make bold statements, I need to apply my knowledge and passions to paper.  Through creating a piece I'm not just passionate about but also knowledgeable about, I am able to include hidden symbols and aspects about the topic that wouldn't have been in the piece otherwise.  An artist's responsibilities intertwine.  One responsibility can not be fulfilled on its own.  All in all, an artist's main responsibility is to inform.  Inform people about the dangers in the world or the hate and violence that needs to change.  Doesn't matter what it is, an artist always informs viewers about something that's important to them.

My role as an artist

As an artist, I always try to express who I am, what I believe in and what's important to me.  I always try to influence change, whether small or big.  Art is an influencer.  It can influence people to do something that they might not have done before.  Through that, I am able to do what I do best.  Create.  Create what I am passionate about in order to enact change.  In saying that, as an artist, I try to influence people to help make the world a better place.  In my case, I like to express how much of an issue climate change is.  Therefore, I try to educate and display the effects of climate change through my art, in hope that people will want to research and see change happen.  This is my way of helping to make the world a better and healthier place.  All in all, art is an influence and so am I.  Through trying to enact change, I am trying to influence people to do good.

influences

Throughout the years, many artists have effected my style of art.  One artist that influenced me right from the beginning of my interest is comic book artist, Michael Turner.  When I first found my passion for art, I immediately wanted to combine two of my passions together, art and superheroes.  This lead me to begin drawing lots of superheroes while pulling inspiration from my favourite artist, Michael Turner.  Growing up reading Michael Turner comics, I ultimately knew that I wanted my artworks to have a similar style to Turner's.  As I grew older, I started to expand my style and many more artists and artworks started influencing me, providing a shift in my style of art.  I went from drawing superheroes to creating pastel post-impression pieces to landing right back into sketches with a more elevated and sophisticated touch.

Strengths

From the very beginning, my favourite form of art has always been the plain drawing or sketches.  Over the years, I have continuously created countless number of sketches since I first starting drawing when I was five.  In that being said, I have really seen the development in my sketching skills.  Starting off with only being able to draw off another artist's sketch, I can now confidently say that I can draw any object from real life.  Adding to that, I am a perfectionist.  I pay attention to every detail and I am not satisfied until I sketch as many details as possible.  I am also very patient and will take as much time as I need to complete a project to my liking.  With that, I can confidently say that my attention to detail and patience has made my sketching skills surpass what I would have ever expected them to become.  All in all, I can definitely say my drawing/sketching skills would definitely be my greatest strength.

IMprovements

Aside from my drawing skills, I can greatly improve upon my painting skills. I have not had much experience with using acrylics.  I have done some pieces throughout the years, but I haven't done enough to practice and improve my skills.  In that being said, I would really love to start using acrylics more often, starting with painting small objects.  From there, I would want to gradually improve my skill to see a difference over time.

exploration goals

Throughout the years I have used many different mediums of art.  One medium that I would love to explore further to create outstanding pieces with is copic or prismacolor markers.  Through creating art pieces for years, attending sewing classes and making lots of pieces, I have seen many copic marker sketches.  Whether they were fashion illustrations or full landscapes, I have always been fascinated with them.  With that being said, I would love to have the opportunity to be able to use this medium and eventually have my own full collection of copic marker materials.  With more and more practice, I hope to one day have my own collection of outstanding copic marker illustrations.  In addition, I have also created many digital art pieces which are mostly landscapes.  I would love to eventually have the right materials or tools to be able to create full on figures and animal digital sketches.

future

In the future, I wish to become an architect or pursue a field in similar areas of study.  I plan to study architectural studies at the University of Toronto and eventually complete a masters in architecture.  I plan to continue creating art pieces and possibly even taking art courses to fulfill my goal for improvements.
